Indian archers Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar set a new world record in the para compound mixed team ranking round at the Asian Para Games in Okazaki on Monday. The pair accumulated 1,402 points at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square, surpassing the previous mark of 1,400.
The earlier record had also been set by Sheetal alongside Rakesh Kumar at the World Para Archery Series in Ahmedabad earlier this year. The new score was also the highest ever recorded at the Asian Para Games, improving on China’s 1,382 points from the 2023 Hangzhou edition.
Toman contributed 698 points from a possible 720 in the men’s compound ranking round, while Sheetal scored 704 in the women’s ranking round.
Sheetal’s individual score was an Asian record and matched the world record. She topped the women’s compound qualification standings, finishing ahead of Singapore’s Nur Syahidah Alim, who scored 683 points, and China’s Xueqing Xu, who recorded 680.
In the men’s compound ranking event, Toman stood third with a personal-best score of 698. China’s Yicheng Zhang led the field with 708 points, setting a new Asian record, while compatriot Xinliang Ai finished with 704.
Sheetal won gold in the women’s compound individual event at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and followed it with a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She is also a world champion and has established herself among the leading archers in the sport despite her young age.
Toman is a world champion in the men’s compound individual category and holds the world No. 1 ranking in his classification. The Indian pair will enter the final as among the leading contenders for the gold medal.
