Batters (L)) Priyansh Arya and Ayush Badoni (R) during their match against North Delhi Strikers in the Delhi Premier League on Saturday.

Ayush Badoni smashed a world record for the most sixes in a T20 innings, while Priyansh Arya dazzled with six maximums in an over, leading South Delhi Superstarz to a remarkable 308/5 against North Delhi Strikers in the Delhi Premier League on Saturday.

Badoni’s explosive innings saw him strike 19 sixes in his unbeaten 165 off just 55 balls.

This innings not only set a new world record for the most sixes in a T20 match, surpassing the previous record of 18 held jointly by West Indies’ Chris Gayle and Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, but also established a new benchmark in T20 cricket.

Gayle’s record was set during the 2017 Bangladesh Premier League when he hit 18 sixes in a 69-ball 146 for Rangpur Riders.

Chauhan matched this feat with 18 sixes in a 41-ball 144 for Estonia against Cyprus in a T20 International earlier this year.

Badoni’s innings was characterised by its aggressive stroke play, featuring eight boundaries alongside his record-breaking sixes. His power-hitting was complemented by Arya’s explosive performance.

Arya, who has represented India U-19, scored a brisk 120 off 50 balls, including ten sixes and ten fours. His highlight was an extraordinary 12th over where he struck six consecutive sixes, with each delivery expertly dispatched over the ropes.

The innings of Badoni and Arya not only propelled South Delhi to their massive total but also set a new record for the highest partnership for any wicket in T20s.

Their 286-run stand for the second wicket surpassed the previous record of 258 runs set by Japan’s Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake and Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming against China earlier this year.

Despite the remarkable performance, South Delhi’s total of 308/5 fell just six runs short of the highest ever T20 total of 314/3, achieved by Nepal against Mongolia during the 2023 Asian Games.
