Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by five wickets, effectively crushing their hopes of making it to the top four in this year’s IPL season. RR’s nervous 193 for 8 in the first innings was compounded by multiple fielding errors during DC’s chase. Batting first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday evening, RR looked shaky from the start but managed to post a competitive total of 193 runs.
RR captain Riyan Parag, while reflecting on his team’s loss, said he was disappointed with the overall effort in the field and added that they did not deserve a spot in the top four."
I feel if you want to win a trophy, if you want to be contending every single year, you've got to be better than what we've done today," Parag said at the post-match presentation.
"Extremely disappointed. I feel we are a way better team than what we've played or shown in the last four or five games."
He said, “Nothing was up to the mark today, energy-wise, skill-wise, or execution-wise", adding, “we shouldn't be in contention for the top four."
RR dropped KL Rahul when he was on zero, which later proved a decisive factor in the game, as the DC opener scored 56 off 42 balls.
With multiple errors on the field, DC managed to cross the line in the last over of the match.
Rajasthan seemed to be in control of the proceedings even towards the later end of the game when DC needed 35 off 18 deliveries with Axar Patel and David Miller at the crease.
However, the two left-handers smashed Donovan Ferreira for 16 runs in an over, shifting the momentum decisively in DC’s favour.
RR had a golden chance to seal their contention for a playoff spot. They could have reached 18 points if they had won all three of their remaining matches.
