Players from Shillong Lajong FC and Malaysian Armed Forces vie for possession during the opening Group E match of the Durand Cup 2025 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong on Saturday.

A packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong bore witness to history and hope on Saturday as Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, declared open the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament.

The opening ceremony, rich in military and cultural spectacle, marked the start of Meghalaya’s extended run as a footballing destination. This is the second successive year the state capital is hosting matches of the prestigious tournament, an honour Sangma hailed as a recognition of Shillong’s deep-rooted football culture.

The home side, Shillong Lajong FC, kicked off Group E proceedings with a dominant 6–0 win over the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM FA), sending local fans into raptures.

Addressing the crowd during the launch, Sangma said, “We are very happy and extremely proud that Shillong is one of the host cities for the Durand Cup for the second consecutive year. This is a great moment for us. We thank the Indian Armed Forces for selecting Shillong as one of the host cities and for giving us an opportunity to host the Durand Cup this year once again in Shillong.”

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the sport. “The State Government is promoting football at the grassroots level and even at the professional level,” he added, linking the tournament’s importance to the broader sporting vision for Meghalaya.

Group E fixtures, including the quarter-finals and semi-finals, will be held in Shillong.

The Indian Armed Forces orchestrated a captivating sequence of performances at the ceremony. These included a Kalarippayattu martial arts display, para motors flypast, motorcycle stunts, and a mesmerising performance by the Army Pipe and Jazz Band.

The Assam Regimental Centre’s cultural team stirred patriotic fervour with a traditional dance on “Badloo Ram Ka Badan”, while the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project added a vibrant local flavour. Bands like Na U Bnai and Ahaia, alongside soloists Deiwitewan Subah and Eniba War, drew applause with their soulful rendition of the iconic ‘Khun U Woh’.

The Durand Cup comes as Meghalaya prepares for a larger sporting milestone, the 39th National Games in 2027. Sangma’s administration has rolled out a series of initiatives aimed at bolstering sporting infrastructure and athlete training.

Under the “Team Meghalaya” project, a grant of ₹39.17 crore has been extended to 26 state-level sports associations and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association. Infrastructure upgrades worth ₹1,500 crore are currently underway, targeting the development of 518 facilities by 2028.

Talent development is being spearheaded under the STAR programme, through which over 24,500 athletes have already been assessed. Simultaneously, the “Chief Minister’s Mission Football 2.0” has identified and trained more than 10,000 young footballers.

These efforts are designed not only to raise Meghalaya’s sporting profile but also to ensure its preparedness when the spotlight of the National Games turns eastward.
