Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgian Striker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia share a moment of mutual appreciation on the field.
The group stages of Euro 2024 concluded dramatically on Wednesday. Rank outsiders Georgia shocked Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, securing a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. All four teams in Group E started the day with three points, and after two draws, all finished with four points. Ukraine was eliminated on goal difference.
Georgia's Historic Victory
In Gelsenkirchen, Georgia defied the odds by defeating the 2016 champions Portugal 2-0. This victory, their first in a major tournament, was achieved with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Georges Mikautadze. This remarkable win has set up a last-16 tie against Spain.

ALopsided Draw
The knockout stage draw is notably unbalanced. Powerhouses Spain, Germany, France, and Portugal find themselves on the same half of the draw, ensuring only one of them can reach the final. This imbalance partly results from Didier Deschamps’ France finishing second in their group.
Easier path for some
On the other side of the draw, one of Romania, Netherlands, Austria, and Turkey is guaranteed a semi-final spot. England faces a potentially less challenging path, with Slovakia, Switzerland, and Romania as possible opponents on their way to a first tournament final on foreign soil.
Belgium through, but struggling
Belgium managed to progress but finished second in their group and now face tournament favourites France. Despite their talent, Belgium's lack of finishing ability was evident, with Romelu Lukaku missing a crucial chance. This deficiency could prove costly against stronger opponents.
Romania and Slovakia; Silencing the skeptics
Romania and Slovakia both knew a draw would see them through from Group E. Despite fears of a repeat of the infamous 1982 "Disgrace of Gijon," both teams played to win. Slovakia, guided by Francesco Calzona, showcased a blend of tactical acumen and set-piece intelligence.
Ukraine's brave exit: A nation's pride
Ukraine's journey at Euro 2024 ended despite a goalless draw. The team's qualification itself was a significant achievement given the turmoil caused by the Russian invasion. Serhiy Rebrov’s side displayed commendable resilience and pride throughout the tournament.

The dirtiest game in Euros history?
Turkey vs. Czech Republic
The high-stakes Group F match between Turkey and the Czech Republic descended into chaos, earning the dubious distinction of the dirtiest game in Euros history. With 16 yellow cards and two reds, the game saw multiple players, including those not on the pitch, being booked. The match culminated in a dramatic 94th-minute winner for Turkey and a post-match altercation resulting in further disciplinary action.
