Abhinash Jamwal has stunned the boxing world with his incredible performance at the 8th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship. The Himachal Pradesh boxer achieved a remarkable feat by defeating the reigning Welterweight champion and highly experienced Shiva Thapa in a thrilling semifinal encounter.
This victory has catapulted Jamwal into the final of the prestigious competition, cementing his place as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Jamwal's victory over Thapa is a culmination of a series of impressive wins throughout the tournament.
Earlier, he had triumphed over 2022 Youth World Champion Vanshaj Kumar, adding to his growing reputation as a rising star in Indian boxing.
The semifinal clash against Thapa was a true test of his skill and resilience, and Jamwal passed with flying colours, securing his place in the final where he will now look to add a national title to his name.
While Jamwal’s victory has been the talk of the tournament, the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) has also made a significant mark at the event.
The team has been dominant throughout the competition, securing representation in eight of the ten weight categories for the finals. SSCB’s strong performance has underlined their status as a powerhouse in Indian boxing.
One of the notable achievements for SSCB came from former World Youth Champion Sachin Siwach. Siwach delivered a commanding performance in the Lightweight (55-60kg) category, defeating Haryana’s Gorish Pujani in a decisive bout to earn a place in the final.
His victory was a testament to his exceptional technique and experience, qualities that have made him one of the top contenders in his weight class.
Another SSCB boxer who shone brightly was Lakshya Chahar. Chahar fought with great determination in the Light Heavyweight (75-80kg) category, where he overcame Mizoram’s Malsawmtluanga to secure his spot in the final.
Chahar’s win was crucial in strengthening SSCB’s overall presence in the finals, as they now have boxers competing in multiple weight divisions.
SSCB’s dominance did not end with Siwach and Chahar. Several other boxers from the team also secured semifinal victories, guaranteeing SSCB’s representation across nearly all weight categories.
Jadumani Singh Mandengbram advanced to the final in the Flyweight category, while Hitesh secured a place in the Light Middleweight final.
Deepak’s victory in the Welterweight category, Jugnoo’s triumph in the Cruiserweight division, and Vishal’s performance in the Heavyweight category all ensured SSCB’s continued dominance on the national stage.
Meanwhile, in the Super Heavyweight (90-90+kg) category, Uttarakhand’s Narender produced a dominant performance to defeat SSCB’s Gaurav Chauhan in their semifinal bout.
Narender’s win set up an exciting final clash with Haryana’s Anshul Gill, who triumphed over Raghav Sharma in another highly anticipated semifinal.
With approximately 300 boxers initially competing across various weight categories, the tournament has now boiled down to just 20 finalists. The championship, which follows the World Boxing Technical & Competition Rules, has seen fierce competition over the course of the week-long event.
Each bout consists of three three-minute rounds, with a one-minute rest interval between each round. The event uses a ten-point scoring system, and each state unit has the opportunity to field up to ten boxers in the tournament.
As the competition draws to a close, the final bouts promise to be thrilling and action-packed. The 8th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship has once again proven to be an important platform for emerging boxing talent in India.
