In a remarkable feat of endurance and determination, para-cyclist Rakesh Banik from Assam's Nagaon district is set to embark on a 9,000 km solo cycling expedition from Moscow to Guwahati in April.
The journey, titled ‘Volga to Brahmaputra,’ is poised to be India’s first long-distance attempt by a specially-abled cyclist.
Banik, 39, who represents Assam in national and international cycling events, aims to promote tourism in Assam and support the Fit India movement through his expedition.
His gruelling 120-day journey will take him across six countries—Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Nepal, and India—before concluding in Guwahati.
“This journey is about shattering limitations and proving that no challenge is too big to overcome,” said Banik. “Through this ride, I hope to inspire others to embrace adventure, fitness, and perseverance.”

The expedition will commence from the Indian Embassy in Moscow in the first week of April, marking a historic moment for Indian para-cycling.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded Banik’s commitment and has extended his support, urging organisations to contribute financially to his mission under corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Former Deputy Director General of the Union Ministry of Tourism, Anil Arow, praised the significance of the journey, stating, “Banik’s journey is not just about covering distance but about breaking stereotypes and showcasing India as an inclusive destination for all travellers, including differently-abled adventurers.”
Banik’s resilience stems from a life-altering accident in 2012, which resulted in the loss of his right leg.
Undeterred, he adopted a prosthetic limb and underwent rigorous training to achieve professional cyclist status.
He has previously completed multiple long-distance expeditions, including a 35-day, 4,500 km ride from Bangkok to Guwahati in 2018.
