Spectators at the Gabba were left disheartened on Saturday as persistent rain allowed for only 13.2 overs on the opening day of the third Test between India and Australia.
However, Cricket Australia (CA) has announced full ticket refunds, providing some solace to the 30,145 fans present at the venue.
Cricket Australia’s ticketing policy entitles spectators to a full refund if fewer than 15 overs are completed in a day.
This rule means the sport’s governing body in Australia narrowly missed saving itself over AUD 1 million in refunds, as play was curtailed just 10 deliveries short of the threshold.
CA also confirmed that it has insurance to cover revenue losses caused by inclement weather.
Rain interrupted the match in the sixth over after India elected to field, with Australia reaching 28 without loss. A heavier downpour followed, forcing a premature end to the day’s proceedings at 4:15 pm local time.
Under CA’s refund policy, single-match ticket holders are eligible for a 100 per cent refund if fewer than 15 overs are completed and no result is achieved.
The five-match series stands evenly poised at 1-1. India secured an emphatic 295-run victory in the first Test in Perth, while Australia bounced back with a 10-wicket win in Adelaide.
