Indian all-rounder R Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing down the curtain on a decorated career in the tournament. The 38-year-old off-spinner shared the news through a heartfelt post on social media.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” Ashwin wrote.
Ashwin’s journey in the IPL spanned 221 matches, where he claimed 187 wickets at an economy of 7.20. With the bat, he contributed 833 runs, including a fifty, showcasing his value as a lower-order all-rounder.
Over the years, Ashwin represented five franchises – Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Giant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. He was a key figure in Chennai Super Kings’ back-to-back title wins in 2010 and 2011, playing a decisive role with his incisive bowling.
In the 2025 season, Ashwin returned to CSK but managed just seven wickets from nine matches. He was bought for INR 9.75 crore ahead of the season, and while the franchise had considered releasing him before the 19th edition, the veteran chose to bid farewell to the tournament on his own terms.
Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in IPL history. His tactical nous, ability to innovate with the ball, and contribution across formats earned him a reputation as one of the most intelligent minds in cricket.
For many, his legacy in the league goes beyond statistics, as he inspired a generation of spinners with his guile and adaptability.
