Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh for a sluggish over-rate during their Indian Premier League match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday night.
Punjab Kings secured their second consecutive win, defeating the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings by five wickets.
This was Punjab Kings’ second over-rate offence of the season. The team was found in violation of Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate violations. As a repeat offence, the penalty was enhanced and Iyer was personally fined ₹24 lakh, the IPL media advisory stated.
In an official statement after the match, the IPL confirmed the disciplinary action. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, will each be fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lower.
Despite the off-field controversy, Iyer’s dominant batting performance played a key role in Punjab’s back-to-back victories against Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings.
He scored a quick-fire 50 off just 29 balls, guiding his team to chase down 210 for five in under 19 overs.
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings posted a formidable 209-run total after being asked to bat first. Young batsman Ayush Mhatre starred with a fluent 73 off 43 balls.
However, the total proved insufficient against a strong Punjab batting line-up, with Iyer’s leadership proving the decisive factor.
