Punjab’s Lovepreet Singh has won the silver medal in the men’s 110 kg weightlifting competition at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Lovepreet, son of a tailor who hails from Amritsar district, has made his family, loved ones and the nation proud with the victory, especially coming from a humble background.
Singh lifted a total of 388 kg — 176 kg in the snatch and 212 kg in the clean and jerk. The medal comes four years after he took bronze at the 2022 edition of the Games.
His father Kirpal, a tailor by profession, said, “First the bronze medal earlier and now the silver, I cannot express what I am feeling. It is all because of the Almighty that we have lived to see these happy days. Otherwise, we didn’t have much.”
Lovepreet is a product of hard work, determination and real-life struggle — “mehnat aur mazdoori", as his father proudly puts it.
The family kept supporting Singh through good and bad times, especially since Lovepreet himself sold vegetables with his uncle before heading for training every day. He first took up weightlifting in Class VIII, drawing inspiration from weightlifters in his village and dreaming of making his mark in the sport.
The real turning point came when another young athlete from Bal Sachandar won a state-level silver medal.
His training ground lay far from home, and getting there was its own daily struggle. His father would cycle him to the bus stop each day, from where Lovepreet would take an auto-rickshaw the rest of the way. “That was our daily routine. That’s how the struggle began,” Kirpal said.
