Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, currently on a private family holiday in Meghalaya, has been bowled over by the state’s climate, cuisine and hospitality.
Tendulkar, who is accompanied by his wife, daughter and a few close acquaintances, arrived in Meghalaya on March 7 and visited some of the region’s most picturesque locations, including Sohra (Cherrapunji), the world’s wettest place, and Mawlynnong, famed as Asia’s cleanest village.
“Wherever he went, fans lined up for a quick selfie and the master blaster was more than happy to pose. He was all smiles,” an official close to his team informed.
“Sachin was bowled over by the climate of the state, the people and their hospitality and the food,” the official added, noting that the cricketer drew considerable fanfare, especially from children in Mawlynnong.
Mawlynnong, which gained prominence over a decade ago, is known for its bamboo skywalk, living root bridges, traditional Khasi homes and pristine surroundings. The village is located in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district and is a popular eco-tourism destination.
Tendulkar also dined at the Marriott Hotel in Shillong, where he sampled signature dishes prepared by MasterChef India finalist Nambie Marak, who specialises in the cuisine of the Garo tribe.
“Some moments are etched in your heart forever — this was one of them. I got the incredible honour of cooking for the legend, @sachintendulkar,” Marak posted on Instagram.
“Like millions of others, I grew up watching him, cheering for him, holding my breath with every shot, and celebrating every time he brought home a victory for India,” she said.
Marak described the cricket icon as “So calm, kind, and humble,” and said he even showed her how to take a better selfie.
“To meet the man who gave us countless unforgettable memories on screen, and to cook for him, it still feels surreal. Some dreams do come true. This one came with goosebumps,” she added.
During his stay, Tendulkar and his family also enjoyed a private picnic near Umiam Lake, taking advantage of the crisp spring weather and scenic landscape.
The former India captain is expected to host a high tea with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma at his resort before proceeding to Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, where he is scheduled to spend a day in the wild.
Tendulkar is slated to return to Mumbai on 9 April.
