Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former India opener Virender Sehwag, has been selected in India’s 15-member squad for the 2026 Under-19 Asia Cup, marking another important stage in his developing cricket career.

The 19-year-old right-handed batter earned his place after a series of strong performances in age-group cricket. While his surname has naturally attracted attention, Aaryavir is working towards establishing an identity based on his own performances.

India’s Asia Cup campaign

The tournament will be played in Muscat, Oman, from November 5 to 14. India, captained by Lakshya Raichandani, have been placed in Group A with Pakistan, Nepal and the UAE.

India will open their campaign a

gainst Nepal on November 6. The team will then face Pakistan on November 8 before completing the group stage against the UAE on November 10.

Strong performances for Delhi

Aaryavir’s recent form was highlighted during the 2026 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, when he struck 173 from 143 balls for Delhi against Chandigarh. His innings included 19 boundaries and eight sixes, reflecting his aggressive batting style and ability to produce a substantial score.

Delhi went on to lose the match, but the innings strengthened Aaryavir’s case for national selection. He had previously made a major impact in the 2024 Cooch Behar Trophy by scoring 297 against Meghalaya, falling just three runs short of a triple century.

That innings also came close to Virender Sehwag’s highest Test score of 319. Had Aaryavir added another 23 runs, he would have gone past his father’s mark. Virender Sehwag had promised him a Ferrari if he managed to break the record.

From Delhi captaincy to India debut

Aaryavir’s progress has also included leadership responsibilities. He was appointed captain of Delhi’s Under-19 team for the 2026-27 Vinoo Mankad Trophy, his first significant assignment as a leader.

In September 2026, he made his India Under-19 debut in a three-match Youth ODI series against Australia. He scored 28, 47 and 34 in the three games as India completed a 3-0 series sweep.

The performances have shown his ability to adjust to different match situations, while his captaincy role has added to his development as a young cricketer.

Carrying a famous cricketing surname

Aaryavir’s progress has been closely followed because of his connection with Virender Sehwag, one of India’s most attacking opening batters. His father was known for fearless strokeplay and for putting pressure on opposing bowling attacks.

Aaryavir has said he is proud of his father’s achievements rather than weighed down by the family name. He has also recognised the need to convert promising starts into major scores and spend longer periods at the crease.

Although Virender Sehwag remains one of his biggest influences, Aaryavir understands that his future will ultimately be shaped by his own performances.

Anvay Dravid also part of India’s squad

The 2026 Under-19 Asia Cup will also feature Anvay Dravid, son of former India captain and batting great Rahul Dravid. Both Aaryavir and Anvay have been named in India’s squad for the tournament.

Their selection brings together the next generation of two prominent Indian cricketing families. However, both youngsters will be looking to move beyond the attention surrounding their surnames and make their own contributions at the continental level.
