The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed intense disruptions for a third consecutive day on Friday, as 12 BJP legislators were marshalled out for repeatedly interrupting proceedings after a resolution was passed seeking the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A.
The chaotic scenes continued as BJP members raised slogans such as "Pakistani agenda nahi chalega" and moved into the well of the House, prompting Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather to order their removal.
The uproar began shortly after the session opened, with BJP MLAs vocally protesting the resolution, which they demanded be declared unconstitutional.
Among those marshalled out was Awami Ittehad Party’s Sheikh Khurshid, the brother of Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid, who held banners inside the chamber. The disruptions led 11 other BJP members to walk out of the session in protest.
The Assembly has been marked by ongoing turmoil since Tuesday, when Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary introduced a resolution affirming the importance of Jammu and Kashmir’s "special status and constitutional guarantees."
The resolution calls upon the central government to initiate dialogue with elected representatives from Jammu and Kashmir for the restoration of these constitutional provisions, in a way that respects both national unity and the region’s distinct identity.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather defended the decision, stating, "The speaker has no authority to decline the bill passed by a majority of house members." He further warned that any future disruptions would result in ejection to preserve order and dignity within the Assembly.
The BJP has opposed the resolution vehemently, arguing that any attempt to reinstate Articles 370 and 35A is both legally and constitutionally invalid.
As debates grow more heated, the session has adjourned multiple times, with Speaker Rather asserting the need for decorum in the House.
