A 2 Megawatt solar power plant has been set up in Kaza, located in the tribal Lahaul Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, to improve the area's power supply.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised the hard work of the Electricity Board employees for completing the project. He mentioned that the plant will be fully operational within a few months after adding a 1 MWh battery storage system.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the state government is focusing on solar energy to make Himachal Pradesh a 'Green State'. To support this, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are being installed in different areas, based on demand.
He also shared that the government approved the installation of 18 Megawatt of solar plants, both ground-mounted and rooftop, on vacant land near Electricity Board offices. In addition, the state plans to install rooftop solar systems on 50,000 houses by 2026-27, with 4,444 applications already received.
Sukhu mentioned that the government is taking steps to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant by better utilizing state resources. This includes reviewing electricity subsidies, rationalising staff, and reassessing high-interest loans taken by the Electricity Board.
By doing so, the Board aims to repay loans at lower interest rates and reduce its debt. This will help make the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board more self-sufficient.
