A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train on Tuesday night following a dispute over closing the coach door during heavy rain, police said.
The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, was travelling in the first-class compartment of a Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local when he got into a heated argument with another passenger between Goregaon and Kandivali stations.
Police said the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, was later arrested from the Kurla area.
According to officials from the Western Railway Police, the altercation began when passengers argued over whether the train’s door should be kept open amid heavy rainfall. The situation escalated quickly inside the crowded compartment.
A disturbing video from the train showed the accused walking inside the coach holding a knife immediately after the attack, while bloodstains were seen on the seats. Panic spread among passengers, several of whom were heard reacting in shock.
“Ye mar diya usko, mar diya (He killed him—he actually killed him),” passengers were heard saying in the video as the situation unfolded. Some commuters were seen moving away from the accused, who briefly looked back at the victim lying on the floor before exiting the frame.
Senior Police Inspector Datta Khuprekar of Borivali Railway Police said the fight initially began as a verbal altercation over the train door during rain. He said the confrontation escalated further when some passengers allegedly assaulted the accused.

“Between Goregaon and Kandivali, two passengers fought over closing the train’s door amid rainfall. During this time, the accused stabbed the victim with a knife and fled the scene,” Khuprekar said.
The victim sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. Railway police reached the location soon after receiving information, took custody of the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
The accused was subsequently traced and arrested in Kurla.
The incident triggered outrage among the victim’s family. His mother, while speaking to reporters, demanded strict punishment for the accused, saying her son had left home the previous day and never returned.
His sister also demanded the death penalty, questioning how passengers could have remained bystanders during the attack and calling for stronger action to ensure commuter safety.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and whether additional passengers were involved in the escalation.
