Incessant heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Manipur, leaving 3,802 people affected and damaging 883 houses, according to official reports on Sunday.
Large portions of the state capital, Imphal, and several areas in Imphal East district have been submerged after the Imphal river and its tributaries overflowed and breached embankments, inundating localities such as Khurai, Heingang and Checkon.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, accompanied by Chief Secretary PK Singh and senior state officials, visited the flood-ravaged zones to assess the situation first-hand. A statement from the Raj Bhavan noted that he inspected Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge and issued instructions for intensified monitoring and prompt relief measures.
The statement read: “At least 3802 people have been affected and 883 houses damaged in the last 48 hours as a result of floods and landslides in the state.”
Altogether, 3,275 localities or villages have been impacted by the deluge. Two individuals have sustained injuries, and the deaths of 64 animals have been reported, an official added.

Twelve landslides have been recorded across various districts, exacerbating the humanitarian situation.
In Imphal East, one of the worst-affected districts, Army and Assam Rifles personnel rescued nearly 800 individuals stranded in submerged localities. SDRF and NDRF teams have also been placed on alert.
Floodwaters inundated several key public institutions, including the All India Radio complex and the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, following the overflow of the Imphal river at Checkon, officials stated.
On Sunday, water levels in the Iril river in Imphal East crossed the danger threshold but had yet to breach embankments. Efforts by local authorities and residents to reinforce embankments are underway.
While the situation marginally improved in Checkon and Wangkhei on Sunday morning, conditions in Khurai and Heingang constituencies remain unchanged since Saturday.
During his visit, Governor Bhalla directed officials to closely monitor water levels and enforce pre-emptive measures. The Raj Bhavan statement added that deputy commissioners have been instructed to initiate evacuation protocols and temporary shelter arrangements for displaced families.
