Three bodies believed to belong to six individuals who went missing from the Jiribam district were discovered near where the Jiri river meets the Barak river along the border of Manipur and Assam, officials reported on Saturday.
The bodies of a woman and two children were located approximately 16 kilometres away from Borobekra in the Jiribam district on Friday night, the same area from which the six individuals vanished on Monday, according to officials in the Jiribam district speaking to PTI.
The bodies have not yet been identified, but there is a suspicion that they may belong to the six missing individuals.
The unidentified bodies were transported to Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) in Assam on Friday night and placed in the morgue for an autopsy. An official indicated that it has not yet been verified that the bodies are those of the missing persons.
He said that they are waiting for the postmortem to be conducted and have collected the photographs for identification.
Autopsies of bodies found in Imphal's Jiribam are done in Assam's Silchar Medical College Hospital due to lack of infrastructural facilities in the town.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh held a meeting with senior ministers on Friday night to discuss the situation after the news of the recovery of the bodies, officials told PTI.
Meanwhile, as news of the recovery of three bodies spread across Imphal Valley, tension rose in all five districts with state authorities declaring a holiday for schools and colleges on Saturday.
