In a major crackdown on illegal liquor smuggling, the Himachal Pradesh Police seized 380 boxes of English liquor concealed beneath sacks of potatoes in a canter vehicle in Bilaspur district, officials confirmed on Friday.
The seizure was made during a routine check at Garamora on Thursday night, when the police grew suspicious of the driver's behavior. “The driver appeared nervous, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle, which led to the discovery of the liquor hidden under potato sacks,” said Rooplal Kathaniya, in-charge of Swarghat police station.
The driver, identified as Pawan Kumar, a resident of Mohal village in Bhuntar, Kullu, was unable to produce any documentation for the consignment. He has since been taken into custody, and a case has been registered under the Excise Act, the police said.
Further investigation into the smuggling operation is currently underway.
