The mysterious death of a woman whose charred body was discovered last Sunday in a burnt car near Tapovan in Chamoli district has taken a darker turn with the recovery of her missing brother’s body from a nearby ditch.
According to police, the body of Sunil Senapati was found on Thursday around 400 metres from the location where his sister, Shweta Padma Senapati, was found dead. The discovery was made by personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the State Disaster Response Force, who used sniffer dogs during the search operation.
Authorities stated that the cause of Sunil’s death will be determined following a post-mortem examination. Initially, Sunil was considered a suspect in the case, as he had gone missing on the same day his sister’s charred remains were found.
Police revealed that the siblings, originally from Bengaluru, had been living together in Dhak for some time. The woman’s body was discovered after local authorities received information about a burnt vehicle parked on the Chachdi-Bhavishya Badri Road near Tapovan.

Upon reaching the spot, investigators found a charred skeleton in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, along with some ornaments that suggested the remains belonged to a woman. A number plate with the registration KA01-0590 was also found near the burnt car.
Subsequent investigation led to the identification of the deceased as Shweta Padma Senapati. A police team was sent to Bengaluru to verify the siblings’ identities and speak with their relatives. During the inquiry, the family shared that Shweta and Sunil had been facing financial difficulties and frequently borrowed money from both relatives and acquaintances.
According to the family, the siblings had at times expressed despair over their financial situation, even suggesting that they might take extreme steps due to their worsening condition.
