7 killed, several injured as tempo plunges into gorge in Doda

Seven persons were killed and several others sustained injuries after a tempo traveller skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the Ponda area in the Doda district on Tuesday morning.


As many as seven people, including a woman and a minor girl, were killed and several others sustained injuries after a tempo traveller skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the Ponda area in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on early Tuesday morning.

 

The official told reporters that the tempo bearing registration number JK06-4847 was on its way when it skidded off the mountainous road and fell into the gorge, triggering a massive rescue operation.

 

“We have recovered four bodies from the spot, and 17 injured persons have been shifted to the hospital for treatment,” said a senior police official while confirming the details about the incident.  

 

However, three more injured succumbed to their injuries later in the day.

 

The rescue operation has been going on, and further investigations are underway to find out the cause of the deadly accident, he added.

 

Mohammad Ashraf (35), Mangta Wani (51), Atta Mohamed (33), Talib Hussain (35), and Rafeeqa Begum (60) were declared brought dead at Government Medical College Hospital, Doda, while five-year-old Uzma Jan and Shakur Din (30) succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Jammu, the officials said.

 

Meanwhile, administrative officials, along with local police, SDRF teams, and volunteers, were immediately pressed into action to carry out rescue and evacuation efforts.

 

Those evacuated from the accident have been rushed to the nearby hospital, though the condition of some of the injured is said to be critical, the officer further added.

Earlier on Sunday, 10 Amarnath pilgrims sustained injuries in a road crash involving three buses of the cavalcade they were travelling in near the south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The injured were taken to a hospital for treatment, where most of them were discharged after receiving first aid.
