Kolkata falls under Seismic Zone III, which means it has a moderate risk of earthquakes. While the city is not as vulnerable as high-risk zones such as Northeast India, the Himalayas, or Gujarat, tremors are occasionally felt due to seismic activity in nearby regions like the Bay of Bengal, Nepal, or North-East India.
Just two days earlier, on Sunday, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district at 8:42 a.m. Tremors were felt in parts of the district, but no loss of life or property was reported.
According to the MeT office, the earthquake’s epicenter was near Kiargi in the Sundernagar area, at a depth of 7 km. Mandi falls under Seismic Zone V, a high-risk earthquake zone.
Both earthquakes serve as reminders of the region’s seismic activity, though no significant damage has been reported in either incident.
