As part of anti-Maoist operations, security forces are continuously running campaigns to destroy the stronghold of Maoists in the forests of Kolhan and Saranda located in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
Forces in the last 39 months have recovered and destroyed 559 IEDs planted by Maoists with the aim of harming the security forces. Several villagers and security forces have lost their lives coming into contact of IEDs.
Paramilitary force personnel along with Jharkhand police have launched a campaign to search for IEDs on the footpaths and unpaved roads leading to Kolhan and Saranda forests.
The recovery of 559 IEDs in 39 months include 66 IEDs in 2022, 272 IEDs in 2023, 131 IEDs in 2024 and 91 IEDs till 6 April 2025.
On the other hand security force personnel and villagers were frequently hit by IEDs. In November and December 2022 two villagers died due to IED explosion in the area, while in 2023 seven villagers died and four were seriously injured in the IED blasts.

In the year 2024 three villagers and a jawan were killed in IED blasts, while in 2025 one villager and a CRPF SI were killed and four security personnel were injured in the blasts.
Notably, according to intelligence inputs top leaders of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation Misir Besra, Anmol, Mochu, Anal, Asim Mandal, Ajay Mahato, Sagen Angaria, Ashwin, Pintu Lohara and dozens of others are roaming in the jungles of Saranda and Kolhan area for subversive activities with their squad.
