In a bold step towards enhancing education, the Meghalaya Government has announced plans to establish 5,000 additional smart classrooms across the state, alongside the introduction of QR code-enabled textbooks for senior students.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma revealed the ambitious initiative during a recent interaction with reporters, outlining the state’s vision to modernise classrooms and make education more accessible in the digital era.
“The Education Department has already implemented smart classrooms in a number of institutions across Meghalaya,” Sangma noted, adding that the state is steadily advancing towards a technologically integrated education model.
The proposed smart classrooms will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, designed to offer students an interactive and engaging learning experience. Sangma emphasised the necessity of adopting modern tools in education, calling smart classrooms an “essential part of contemporary education.”
“These classrooms are crucial for enhancing student learning,” he remarked, underlining the need to bridge the digital divide in Meghalaya’s educational infrastructure.
The state government has approached the central government for funding to implement the project, which is expected to significantly enhance the quality of education across Meghalaya.
QR code-enabled textbooks
In addition to the classroom initiative, the state plans to introduce QR code-enabled textbooks for students in Classes 10 to 12, focusing on science, mathematics, and social science.
The textbooks, scheduled for launch in the next academic session, will include QR codes linking students to video lessons and solved exercises.
“This will serve as a comprehensive learning solution, providing a more interactive and in-depth approach to learning. It will also help eliminate the need for additional tuition for students,” Sangma stated.
"The integration of technology with traditional learning methods aims to empower students with the resources they need to excel in their studies while preparing them for the digital age," the CM said.
Sangma stressed that such measures were vital for fostering innovation and closing the educational gap.
By modernising its classrooms and embracing digital textbooks, Meghalaya is poised to set a benchmark in educational reforms for the entire region.
