Six people suspected to be members of the radical Meitei group Arambai Tenggol were arrested in connection with a death in Manipur’s Thoubal district, police said on Thursday.
The victim, Md Nawash, was kidnapped from his home on Tuesday by suspected members of the group for ransom. Later, he was taken to the Thoubal district hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The arrested suspects were identified as Sagolsem Chingkheinganba Singh (25), Chingakham Sanatomba Singh (19), Sapam Somorjit Singh (32), Maibam Bokenjit Singh (24), Athokpam Jiban Singh (30), and Chingakham Mani Singh (41).
The Arambai Tenggol group denied involvement in the incident. They claimed that their Unit 2 Andro branch had no part in the kidnapping of drug users that led to the death. The group said it had arrested those responsible and handed them over to the police.
