Police in Mau, Uttar Pradesh, have registered a case against 86 individuals in connection with the alleged fake appointments of 42 teachers at government-aided schools. The schools, which are run by the state’s social welfare department, are now at the centre of a major fraud investigation.

The accused individuals include a wide network of officials and administrators. Among them are three former district social welfare officers of Mau, the then basic education officer, and four block education officers. Also, various supervisors and desk assistants from the department, alongside the 42 teachers who were allegedly appointed using fake documents and 19 managers of the aided primary schools are named. As a result of the ongoing probe, the salaries of all 42 teachers have been put on hold.

The case was officially registered on August 5, following a complaint from Mau's social welfare officer, Rashmi Mishra. The action was taken on the instructions of the Additional Chief Secretary, Social Welfare, on the basis of an investigative report, which he received on June 25.

SHO of Kotwali police station of Mau Anil Kumar Singh on Friday said police are investigating the case further.

Mishra told the media that after 2014, 70 teachers have been appointed in Mau in schools funded by the social welfare department and run by private management systems. A probe has revealed that 42 newly-appointed teachers were appointed on the basis of fabricated documents.

Mishra further said that the probe into the rest of the appointments was also under way, indicating the scope of the fraud may be even bigger.

Besides being breach of public's trust, it points to an oversight failure in the education and social welfare department. Everyone who was behind the fraud, from the officials who facilitated the scam to the teachers who profited from it, will now be made answerable by the authorities.
