Kerala government has taken the decision to rehabilitate 49 additional individuals who lost their houses during last year's landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala, and the total number of rehabilitated beneficiaries reaches 451. The decision was made at Tuesday's Cabinet meeting and was announced by Revenue Minister K Rajan at a memorial function in Meppadi, which coincided with the first anniversary of the tragedy that left a trail of devastation in Wayanad, killing people and destroying homes, agricultural land, and businesses.

In addition to shelter, the government will also make traders who lost shops, commercial establishments, rental houses, goods, and other property a compensation. A committee of officials and experts will be set up to decide on reasonable compensation, the minister added.

For those in need of regular medical care, the assistance will be continued up to December 31, with ₹6 crore being provided from the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF).

A memorial will be constructed at the centre of Puthumala, which is one of the most affected locations, at ₹93.93 lakh, and work will start before Onam.

Minister Rajan said that more than 100 applicants for inclusion in the government's list of housing benefits had been heard. Qualified families would be incorporated after verification, and others could be placed on different disaster aid schemes. Field inspections are to commence in August.

In a significant effort for rehabilitating the tribals, the government has come across five hectares of land in Meppadi village's Vellarimala, where houses and 10 cents of land each will be given to 13 tribal families.

The minister also instructed that houses in Elston township, which is being developed as a resettlement colony, shall be finished by 31 December, subject to weather conditions.

“The government’s aim is to implement a comprehensive and transparent rehabilitation plan, open to social auditing,” Rajan said.

"There may be shortcomings, we’re open to discussing them. The government is committed to embracing and supporting every survivor.”

Rajan also complimented the bravery of people living in the area, whose prompt response following the landslides rescued a large number of lives before rescue teams in their official capacity could reach the spot. "They executed almost impossible rescue operations," he said.

The condolence meeting was graced with the presence of Ministers OR Kelu and T Siddique, District Panchayat President Samshad Marakkar, Meppadi Grama Panchayat President K Babu, district level officers, and political party representatives.

While this, the state Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also sanctioned compensation to victims of the Vilangad landslide in Kozhikode district, with a relief package not much different from what was provided in Chooralmala.

As per a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, livelihood compensation will be given on the recommendation of the District Collector, and financial support for treatment.
