Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserted on Saturday that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will never break under any pressure after the party successfully tabled and won a confidence motion in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.
The motion was moved during a special session convened in the wake of the defection of seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, who recently merged with the BJP.
This was AAP’s second confidence motion in the House. The first was tabled in 2022 when the party claimed attempts were being made to poach its MLAs.
The motion grants immunity to the ruling party against any no-confidence motion for the next six months.
According to official sources, 80 of the 94 AAP MLAs were present when the motion was tabled by CM Bhagwant Mann, debated, and passed.
Over 88 MLAs attended the session on Friday, though some left after lunch. A whip was issued by Chief Whip Baljinder Kaur, making attendance mandatory.
The MLAs who were absent included Jaswinder Singh Ramdas (Attari), Devinderjeet Singh Laddi Dhos, Manjinder Singh Lalpura, and suspended MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap. Two MLAs — Laljit Singh Bhullar and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra — are currently in jail.
Addressing the media after the motion, Mann said, “There are so many rumours that AAP is on the verge of breaking. But let me tell you that AAP will never break.
We are, in fact, growing our presence across the country and continue to be the youngest national party.”
He added that people are impressed with AAP’s work and will not leave the party despite attempts by others to lure its legislators.
