A joyous wedding celebration turned into a nightmare for a family in Muktsar’s Narang Colony when their home was burgled while they were out attending the ceremony.
After the incident, the Muktsar police issued a public advisory urging residents to tighten home security and exercise caution when sharing travel plans online.
The burglary took place at the residence of Harinder Kumar, who, along with his family, had left on Sunday to attend his daughter's wedding. When they returned the next morning, the family found their home ransacked—cupboards forced open, belongings scattered, and cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs missing.
A case has been registered at the Muktsar City police station, and within days, the police arrested two men and a woman in connection with the theft. During their remand, Rs 5.06 lakh in cash have been recovered from the accused.
Investigations revealed that the burglars had easily identified the vacant house, with the police highlighting the dangers of oversharing personal movements on social media.
“People unintentionally make their homes easy targets,” said an investigating officer. “A WhatsApp status like ‘Gone to a wedding’ or a Facebook post tagged in another city is more than enough for someone planning a break-in. Our message is loud and clear: celebrate freely, but post wisely,” he added.
“It is always good to assign a trusted person to keep an eye on your home while you're away, and to deposit cash or valuables in the bank. What seems like a harmless post to friends could become an open invitation to thieves,” he further added.
