Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday for a three-day visit to review the security situation, assess development projects and engage with stakeholders in the Union Territory.
The visit will include high-level meetings with security agencies and administrative officials to evaluate the prevailing law and order situation.
Sources familiar with the matter said Shah is likely to arrive in Jammu on Thursday evening and meet political leaders at Lok Bhawan.
He is scheduled to visit the International Border at Hiranagar in Kathua district on Friday morning and receive a briefing from Border Security Force (BSF) officials on the current situation.
Later, on Friday, he will hold a high-level review of the security scenario at Lok Bhawan. On February 7, Shah will travel to Srinagar, where he will review several key projects for Jammu and Kashmir.
This will be his second high-profile visit to assess the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir in less than a month. He had earlier chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi, followed by a visit by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and senior paramilitary officials to Jammu on January 14 and 15.
The visit is considered important for both the Jammu and Kashmir regions, as the Chief Minister and the Union Home Minister are expected to discuss the reopening of closed tourism destinations and the development of new tourism sites in the UT.
On Thursday, during his address in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would raise the issue of closed tourism destinations with Home Minister Amit Shah.
Omar, who holds the finance and tourism portfolios, said, “I believe the time has now come to reopen them.
“From the government’s side, discussions with the Government of India on this issue are ongoing. The Home Minister is scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days, and I assure the House that this issue will certainly be discussed with him,” he added.
Approximately 50 tourist destinations were shut down by the LG administration after terrorists gunned down 26 civilians, mostly tourists, in the Pahalgam area of south Kashmir on April 22, 2025.
He added that the registration and renewal of guest houses, hotels, homestays, travel agencies and other tourism units are now being carried out online.
Omar also said the government is examining a proposal to notify new tourism destinations in J&K, including several locations in Ramban district such as Godagali, Nathatop, Daggan Top, Neel Top, Mahoo, Sarvadhar (Pogal–Paristan), Sargali–Pogal, Chanderkote and Bhatni.
