Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to land in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, a visit primarily aimed at huddling with the Bharatiya Janata Party state core committee. A major highlight of his trip will be a meet-and-greet with the BJP councillors who recently secured a landmark victory for the party in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation during the local body polls.
Because of the high-profile nature of the visit, the city police have announced a series of sweeping traffic and parking restrictions starting tonight. If you're planning to drive through the city, you'll need to be aware that the regulations kick in this evening, Saturday, from 7:00 pm until 11:30 pm, and will remain in force throughout most of Sunday, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
For tonight, parking is strictly banned on both sides of the road along the stretch from the Domestic Airport through Chacka, Pettah, and Pattoor, all the way to the Guest House via the General Hospital and Women’s College roads.
The restrictions get even tighter on Sunday. From morning until evening, several key arteries will be off-limits for parking. This includes major hubs like Thampanoor Flyover, Power House Road, and the Vellayambalam-TTC stretch. Other areas, such as the surrounding areas of the Music College, Thycaud, and the Thakaraparambu Flyover, are also included in the list. Fundamentally, the entire stretch from the airport to the city, including the byroads such as Kalabhavan Mani Road and Udaya Palace Road, will be closely watched.
Commuters are being advised to plan their routes in advance or stick to public transport where possible to avoid getting caught in the inevitable congestion around these VIP transit points.
