A suspected Babbar Khalsa terrorist was killed in an explosion in Punjab’s Amritsar on Tuesday morning, the police said, adding that the explosive ‘probably landed from Pakistan’. The deceased had allegedly come to retrieve a bomb near the Amritsar bypass but due to mishandling, it exploded in his hands.
The incident happened near Decent Avenue Colony on Majitha Road Bypass at around 9.30 am. According to local residents, after hearing a loud and sudden blast, they rushed to the spot and informed the police. Officials from the Sadar police station and the bomb disposal squad reached the site and initiated an investigation.
A police official said “We received information about a blast and found a severely injured person at the scene. The injured individual was sent to the hospital, but he succumbed to injuries.”
The deceased had suffered extensive injuries and had lost both his arms in the explosion, the official added.
“It was an explosive consignment. We are probing. It probably landed from Pakistan. The deceased had come to pick up the assignment. The assignment was dumped here, and he had come to collect it. It possibly has an ISI angle. We will soon identify the man,” Maninder Singh, senior superintendent of police, Amritsar Rural, said.
“Forensic teams have been called to examine the blast material. We are probing the nature of the explosive device,” another police official added. Security has been increased in the area, and CCTV footage is being reviewed. Residents of the colony are also being questioned as part of the investigation.
Earlier this year, in March, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches on 15 locations linked to Babbar Khalsa, a banned Khalistani terror outfit, across Punjab.
