In a major setback for the Punjab Police, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bhindi Saidan police station in Amritsar has been apprehended after 2 kilograms of heroin were seized from his possession.

The accused officer has been identified as Shashpal Singh, who appeared before an Ajnala court on Monday. The accused officer was remanded one day of police custody for further questioning. His arrest followed a comprehensive internal inquiry launched after senior officials received inputs about his alleged involvement in illegal activities.

Initial probe revealed that a consignment of narcotics, smuggled across the border through a drone drop, had come into the SHO’s possession. Instead of following official procedure and recording the seizure, he allegedly kept the heroin for personal gain and is suspected to have destroyed part of the consignment while trying to hide the remaining quantity.

After receiving credible information about the violation, SSP Sohail Mir ordered an immediate investigation. The probe confirmed that the seized narcotics were never entered into official police records. After this finding, the SHO was suspended with immediate effect.

Bhindi Saidan police station, located close to the Pakistan border, has recently remained under security focus. The station was targeted in a grenade attack on March 30, when a video surfaced showing two persons throwing explosives at the premises. A group calling itself the ‘Khalistan Liberation Army’ later claimed responsibility on social media, though police had dismissed the claim as fake at the time.

Police are now carrying out a detailed inquiry to examine whether the officer had links with a larger drug trafficking or criminal network. Officials said strict action will be taken against anyone found involved, and further revelations are expected during custodial interrogation.
