The Andaman and Nicobar administration on Saturday set a new Guinness World Record by unfurling the world’s largest underwater national flag at Radhanagar Beach on Swaraj Dweep, executing a coordinated marine operation involving multiple agencies, trained divers, and senior officials.
The massive Indian Tricolour, measuring approximately 60 by 40 metres, was deployed beneath the sea in a complex exercise that required synchronised effort from personnel across departments. The feat was accomplished at Radhanagar Beach, one of the most prominent coastal sites in the islands, drawing attention for its scale and precision.
Lieutenant Governor DK Joshi, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar, and Director General of Police HS Dhaliwal were present at the site to witness the record-setting event. Teams from the Andaman and Nicobar Police, Forest Department, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard, along with scuba divers from various diving centres, collaborated in the operation.

The underwater unfurling demanded meticulous planning, given the logistical challenges of deploying a flag of such dimensions beneath the sea. Divers worked in tandem to ensure proper positioning and stability of the Tricolour, while support teams coordinated from the surface to maintain safety and timing.
At 10.35 am, Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath formally confirmed the achievement and presented the certificate to the Lieutenant Governor, marking the official recognition of the record.
Addressing those present, Joshi commended the teams for their effort and coordination. He described the feat as a notable addition to the islands’ growing list of distinctive accomplishments and underlined its significance in showcasing the region’s capabilities in organising large-scale, complex events.
The administration has scheduled another attempt at a Guinness World Record on Sunday. The proposed event, titled the ‘Tallest Human Stack’, is set to take place at the Lighthouse dive site on Swaraj Dweep, with senior officials, including the Lieutenant Governor, expected to attend.
The latest achievement reflects the increasing prominence of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a hub for adventure tourism and marine-based activities. With its clear waters and established diving infrastructure, Swaraj Dweep has emerged as a preferred destination for underwater exploration and record-setting initiatives.
