In the midst of controversy over an alleged audio clip linked to the 2022 Ankita Bhandari murder case, actress Urmila Sanawar arrived in Dehradun on Tuesday. Urmila had been missing along with her husband and former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore,
Several cases have been registered against Sanawar under various sections at police stations in Dehradun and Haridwar. Police have also issued her a notice, asking her to appear for questioning in connection with the matter.
In a related development, Dharmendra Kumar, president of the Shiromani Guru Ravidas Vishva Mahapeeth, has lodged a complaint at Bahadrabad police station against Urmila Sanawar and Suresh Rathore. He has accused them of attempting to tarnish the image of a BJP leader.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said that delivering justice to “Uttarakhand’s daughter” Ankita Bhandari has been the state government’s top priority.
Addressing the media at the Secretariat’s Media Centre, the Chief Minister said the government had handled the case with seriousness, sensitivity and complete transparency.
He said a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by woman officer Renuka Devi, was formed to ensure a fair and inclusive probe. The SIT examined every aspect of the case in detail, he added.
As a result of strong legal representation by the state, all three accused were awarded life imprisonment, the Chief Minister said.
Dhami further stated that the SIT investigation was upheld not only by the trial court but also by the High Court and the Supreme Court, reflecting the fairness and strength of the probe.
He said attempts were now being made to create an unnecessary atmosphere in the state over an alleged audio clip, even though the judicial process had reached its conclusion and the guilty had been punished.
On the demand for a CBI probe, Dhami said Ankita’s parents were the most affected by the tragedy. He said he would speak to them and take any future decision only after considering their emotions and expectations.
He reiterated that the state government remains fully committed to the safety, dignity and justice of daughters.
