Madhya Pradesh assembly opposition leader Umang Singhar on Sunday called the arrest of Chaitanya Baghel, the son of previous Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, in the ₹2,100 crore liquor scandal as "illegal". In a conversation with the media, the Congress leader alleged the people and dissent voices were being suppressed throughout the country.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday arrested Chaitanya Baghel in the alleged liquor scam-linked money laundering case. He was accused by the probe agency of receiving ₹16.70 crore in the scam and taking a central role in disposing of over ₹1,000 crore that was the proceeds of crime.
"The arrest of Baghel's son, former Chhattisgarh CM, is illegal and unlawful. Voices and dissent of people are being stifled in the country. The Bharatiya Janata Party is harassing the family members of our leaders Rahul Gandhi and Bhupesh Baghel," Singhar stated.
Individuals who were voicing their concerns against the BJP government on social media were being harassed, he alleged, further asserting that the BJP intends to end democracy in the country.
Taking a jab at Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Singhar said that he must report to the state legislative assembly on the investments that he was able to attract for the state on his official visit to Spain and Dubai.

"CM Yadav is fond of tourism, and therefore he went to Spain and Dubai on the plea of getting investment for MP," he accused. He opined that the chief minister must tell the assembly where he went and how much investment he brought to MP.
"Since the fund he spent on his foreign trip was public money, people have every right to know about his tour expense and benefits," said the Congress leader. Yadav had been on an official trip to Dubai and Spain between July 13 and 19.
