Just hours after his loss in the Ludhiana West by-election to AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora, Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu stepped down as the Working President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday.
Ashu said he takes the moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the bypoll, and further added that he had personally requested the Congress high command to allow his chosen team to handle his campaign. “We gave it our all,” he said, referring to his and his team’s efforts during the bypoll.
However, party insiders indicated that Ashu’s resignation may have also been influenced by his ongoing tensions with PPCC chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa. Notably, Ashu had earlier made it clear that he did not want either Warring or Bajwa to campaign on his behalf.
