Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday distributed appointment letters to more than 5,500 newly recruited teachers, describing the move as a milestone in the state government’s push for transparent and merit-based recruitment in the education sector.
At a ceremonial function in Guwahati, Sarma handed over appointment letters to 5,690 candidates appointed under the Education Department. The recruits will serve across different levels of the education system, from primary schools to research-level positions in the higher education sector.
The Chief Minister said the appointments reflected the government’s effort to ensure fairness in recruitment and strengthen the education system while creating employment opportunities for the state’s youth.
According to a post by the Chief Minister’s Office on X, the event marked a “historic day for Assam’s education sector”, highlighting the government’s focus on transparent hiring.
“With this, the total number of government appointments in Assam has reached 1,64,359, reflecting the Government of Assam’s unwavering commitment to empowering youth and strengthening the education system,” the CMO said.
During the event, Sarma also took a swipe at the previous Congress government, alleging that recruitment to government posts in the state had been marred by corruption in the past.
He claimed that the current administration had succeeded in making the recruitment process transparent and merit-based.
“The 2021–2026 job season concludes. Government recruitments in Assam were marred with corruption during the Congress era. Today, I humbly state that not only have we eliminated corruption in government recruitments but also given 1.64 lakh jobs against our promise of one lakh jobs,” Sarma said in a post on X.

The BJP had earlier promised during the campaign for the 2021 Assam Assembly elections that it would provide one lakh government jobs each year. However, the party later clarified that the target of one lakh jobs applied to the entire five-year term of the government.
Sarma credited the people of Assam, particularly the youth, for supporting the government’s efforts to make the recruitment process transparent.
“This could not have been possible without the support of the people of Assam, especially the youths, who chose hard work over shortcuts and believed in the government’s promise,” he said.
Looking ahead to the next electoral cycle, the Chief Minister announced a fresh target for employment generation if the BJP returns to power.
He said the government plans to create two lakh government job opportunities between 2026 and 2031 while continuing to ensure a corruption-free recruitment system.
“To them, I promise again today, the 2026-2031 season will bring in two lakh corruption-free government job opportunities,” Sarma said.
The distribution of appointment letters comes ahead of the next Assembly elections in Assam and forms part of the government’s broader effort to highlight its performance in job creation and administrative reforms during its current term.
