The Assam Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has granted approval for the establishment of a development council dedicated to the 'Kiran Sheikh' community, residing in the Barak Valley.
This decision, disclosed by Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah following a meeting of the council of ministers, fulfills a longstanding demand of the Kiran Sheikh community.
"The Kiran Sheikh community in Barrak Valley had been demanding for a development council for long. The cabinet has given approval for it, in line with such development councils for other communities," Baruah said.
The cabinet also gave its consent for use of the Meitei script for education in Manipuri language at primary level in schools, he said.
Additionally, Baruah announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the foundation laying ceremony for a semiconductor unit at Jagiroad on March 13, through virtual means.
The state's Industry, Commerce, and Public Enterprise Department have been tasked with facilitating the necessary clearances and approvals required for the establishment of this unit by the Tata Group.
Moreover, the Cabinet has granted administrative approval for funding various projects, including a water supply scheme in Jorhat town, the construction of Karimganj Medical College, the Rang Ghar beautification project, and the Amingaon sports complex.
In a significant move, the Cabinet has also approved a sovereign guarantee to a bank for the establishment of 1,000-MW solar plants in the state, as highlighted by Baruah.
