Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inspected flood-affected areas in Bokakhat, Golaghat district.
Traversing the inundated regions in Upper Assam by speedboat, Sarma visited relief camps set up after an embankment breach between Negheriting-Rongagorah Duke and Nikori PWD Road.
In interactions with displaced residents, Sarma assured swift repairs to roads and embankments, enabling a prompt return to their homes.
The chief minister also reviewed the flood situation in Kaziranga National Park, now extensively inundated after several years.
"We are implementing stringent measures, including regulating vehicular traffic on the national highway, to ensure wildlife safety," Sarma stated.
Addressing media persons outside a relief camp, he elaborated on ongoing relief efforts: "We are providing comprehensive relief and rehabilitation. Medical camps, food supplies, including baby food, are being organized for those in relief camps. Officials are directed to expedite road and embankment repairs."
Sarma acknowledged the severity of the second wave of flooding affecting the entire state, with some areas in Upper Assam showing signs of receding water levels. "Hopefully, the situation will improve in the next few days," he added.
The chief minister pointed out the scale of the crisis, with 6.71 lakh people impacted across 20 districts and the Brahmaputra River, along with major tributaries, surpassing danger levels at multiple locations.
District commissioners have been instructed to compile lists of fully or partially damaged houses for prompt compensation disbursement. Sarma announced plans to install geo-tubes at breached embankments once water levels recede.
"We aim to complete this within the next two to four days, providing significant relief to the affected populace," he said.
Sarma expressed confidence in the state’s response capabilities but mentioned readiness to seek assistance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi if necessary.
"We are doing our utmost to aid flood-affected residents. Should we need additional support, Prime Minister Modi has assured us of all possible assistance," Sarma concluded.
