The flood situation in Assam has taken a severe turn as the River Kushiyara in Karimganj has surged past the danger level, affecting over 170,000 people across ten districts.

With 631 villages now submerged, the region faces widespread displacement and disruption.

In response, authorities have established 102 relief camps, providing shelter for 13,094 displaced individuals.

The state grapples with the challenge of delivering adequate relief and support as the floodwaters continue to rise, posing a threat to additional areas.

Emergency assistance efforts are underway, with close monitoring of water levels to mitigate further damage.

The Assam government has mobilised resources and personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.

The situation remains critical, with the state bracing for potential additional flooding and its subsequent impacts. Water Resource Minister Pijush Hazarika has been actively overseeing the flood response in Karimganj.

Hazarika visited several relief camps and interacted with flood victims, addressing concerns about the distribution of relief supplies.

Despite widespread allegations of improper relief distribution, Hazarika stated after his visit and a review meeting with district administration and local MLAs that he had received no complaints regarding malpractice in the camps.

Karimganj district has been particularly hard-hit in this recent flood episode. Hazarika noted that the floods have affected at least 200,000 people in the state.

The government has already disbursed ex gratia compensation to those impacted by the initial flood earlier this year.

Hazarika also announced plans for new dykes along the Barak and Singla rivers to control future flooding.

Concerned departments have been instructed to prepare project reports for these proposed dykes.

In a related visit, Hazarika called on former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha, who is recuperating at home in Silchar after suffering a minor brain stroke.

Hazarika wished the nonagenarian BJP leader a speedy recovery.
