The Assam government on Tuesday unveiled a wide-ranging development package focused on modernising school infrastructure, strengthening law enforcement in emerging administrative units, and boosting the global employability of local youth.
At a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state Cabinet approved a ₹2,750 crore project titled Supporting School Education in Assam, designed to construct 400 new schools and 1,733 Anganwadi Centres across the state. The scheme will also introduce trained educators and equip classrooms with modern technology, particularly in science and mathematics.
The initiative marks one of the largest state-led education overhauls in recent years and aims to improve adolescent wellbeing in tandem with classroom performance. Government officials stated the project is designed not just to expand infrastructure but to ensure that educational delivery meets national and global standards.
In a parallel move aimed at generating employment opportunities beyond state borders, the Cabinet gave clearance to the Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative for Global Human Talent (CM-FLIGHT). Under the scheme, 180 youths will be trained in foreign languages this financial year with ₹1.5 lakh allocated per candidate.
The programme is expected to improve prospects for aspirants seeking work abroad, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, and technology where multilingual skills are in demand.

Cabinet ministers also approved the establishment of the Assam Innovation and Startup Foundation, which will operate under the Department of Innovation, Incubation and Startups (DIIS). The body will offer support to budding entrepreneurs and innovators, contributing to job creation and economic diversification within and beyond Assam.
On the urban development front, the Collective Infrastructure Development of Apartment Buildings scheme was given a nod. It aims to strengthen internal infrastructure in apartment complexes, including roads, power systems, water supply and security mechanisms. The project will be funded through the MLALADs and United Fund channels.
Turning to internal security, the Cabinet sanctioned ₹150 crore under the MOITRI scheme to upgrade police stations. Additionally, ten new posts of Co-District Superintendent of Police (CDSP) will be created to oversee policing in ten soon-to-be operational administrative units, often referred to as co-districts.
As part of land reform efforts, the Cabinet also cleared proposals under Mission Basundhara 3.0, including the conversion of 158 bighas of land in six districts, regularisation of 234 tea grant or period lands, and land allocation for 48 infrastructure projects and 27 non-individual entities.
Tuesday’s Cabinet decisions reflect a broader push by the Sarma-led administration to improve state governance through integrated education, policing, innovation, urban services, and employment training.
