The Assam government has announced a ₹800 crore initiative to rejuvenate 129 beels (wetlands) across the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed on Saturday.
The project, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank, aims to restore 4,000 hectares of beels to boost indigenous fish production and enhance water storage capacity.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma stated, “This project will revitalise Assam’s hydrological resources and aid in flood mitigation, groundwater recharge, and erosion control.”
The rejuvenation of beels, crucial biodiversity hotspots in Assam, is expected to yield an additional 1,200 kg of fish per hectare annually. The initiative will not only support local fisheries but also conserve native aquatic species.
Beels are vital to the state’s ecosystem, supporting aquatic plants, animals, and migratory birds, while also contributing to sustainable water management
