Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed plans to introduce robotic surgery at key healthcare institutes in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar, aiming to transform surgical care in the region.
Announcing the news via social media, Sarma stated, “For the first time in Assam – Robotic Surgery in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar, which will transform surgical procedures in the State.”
At an event marking World Anaesthesia Day, Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) Principal Dr Sanjeeb Kakati confirmed the launch of the first robotic surgery unit at AMCH in Dibrugarh, scheduled for November 2024.
He described the technology as a game-changer for the healthcare landscape in Assam and the Northeast.
Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, involves the use of a robotic arm, allowing doctors to perform complex operations with enhanced precision and control.
This technique is minimally invasive, offering several benefits such as reduced complications, shorter recovery time, less pain, and smaller scars.
Dr Kakati noted that the cutting-edge technology would revolutionise procedures like coronary artery bypass, gallbladder removal, hip replacement, hysterectomy, and kidney removal.
