The Assam government has resolved to ban the serving and consumption of beef in public places, including hotels and restaurants, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday following a state cabinet decision.
The move will amend existing laws on beef consumption to strengthen regulations. Speaking at a press conference, Sarma stated, “We have decided to ban serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places.”
While the current law prohibits beef consumption near religious places, it does not extend to restaurants, hotels, or social gatherings. Sarma explained, “Now, we have decided to make the law stronger to put a complete ban on consumption of beef in public places too in Assam.”
During the cabinet meeting, attended by Sarma virtually from Delhi, other key decisions were also taken.
These include expanding the Guwahati-Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport road from four lanes to six and announcing a cabinet expansion scheduled for 7 December.
Sarma also briefed on his meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which he submitted proposals for projects worth ₹1 lakh crore.
These proposals include increasing the capacity of the Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemical Limited to five million tonnes, a ₹10,000-crore expansion of the Namrup fertiliser plant, and the construction of a Guwahati ring road.
Additionally, Sarma unveiled plans for a ₹25,000-crore expressway connecting Guwahati and Silchar via Meghalaya, aiming to reduce travel time between the cities from 12 hours to just five.
