The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate on Saturday arrested two key suspects in the kidnapping and murder of gold trader Swapan Kamila, whose body was recovered from the Bidhannagar South police station area on October 28.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Dhali, the driver of Rajganj BDO Prashant Barman, and Tufan Thapa, a contractor reportedly close to the BDO. Both were detained from North Bengal and later formally arrested. The court has remanded them to 12 days of police custody.
According to police sources, Raju worked as Barman’s personal driver whenever he visited Kolkata, while Tufan, though a contractor by profession, maintained close personal and family ties with the BDO. Investigators believe both were present at the scene of the crime and that the abduction and murder were premeditated.
An officer from the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said, “Interrogation of the accused has begun. Initially, it appears that complications in personal relationships may have been the motive behind the murder.”
The police have already recovered the car used in the crime and several important documents, and they suspect that more individuals may be involved.
A senior official added that after extensive questioning, both men were arrested due to inconsistencies in their statements. “We will interrogate them in custody, and more details about the involvement of others—including the BDO—may come to light,” the official said.
