The West Bengal Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari over his controversial remark about Muslim Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs. The resolution, introduced by the ruling TMC, was passed through a voice vote.
The resolution was moved by TMC chief whip Nirmal Ghosh after BJP members staged a walkout in protest. The walkout followed Speaker Biman Banerjee’s decision to deny a discussion on a calling attention motion brought by the BJP.
Ghosh, while presenting the resolution, accused Adhikari of attacking the country’s religious and social fabric. The controversy arose from Adhikari’s statement on Tuesday, in which he said that Muslim MLAs from the TMC would be "thrown out" of the assembly if the BJP came to power.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned Adhikari’s remarks on Wednesday, criticising the BJP for promoting divisive politics. She accused the party of attempting to introduce "fake Hinduism" in West Bengal.
