A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) trooper, allegedly in disguise as a smuggler, was fatally shot by the Border Security Force (BSF) in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, according to BSF officials.
The confrontation took place in the Bongaon area when a group of Bangladeshi smugglers attempted an illegal entry into India by breaching the newly constructed barbed wire fence.
BSF officials reported that a scuffle erupted as a BSF patrol unit intervened to prevent the smugglers' entry, leading to a physical altercation between the two groups.
The situation escalated when the attackers wielded weapons against the BSF patrol party, prompting the unit to open fire in self-defence. During the exchange, one of the attackers sustained injuries and was swiftly transported to a hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the BGB in a flag meeting informed the BSF that one of their personnel was missing, and they suspected his presence near the Indian border. Subsequent identification revealed that the deceased individual was Mohammad Riyasudin, a sepoy in the BGB.
Intriguingly, he was found in casual attire – a lungi and a t-shirt – accompanying cattle smugglers and engaging in an assault on BSF personnel.
The BSF expressed uncertainty about the motive behind the BGB sepoy's presence at the international border in civilian clothing while associating with cattle smugglers.
Despite repeated protest letters to the BGB regarding cattle smuggling, Bangladeshi smugglers and miscreants persist in their illicit activities, frequently resorting to violent attacks on BSF jawans.
This incident adds to the complexities of border management and raises questions about the involvement of BGB personnel in smuggling activities along the border. It underscores the challenges faced by security forces in curbing illegal activities while ensuring the safety of personnel on both sides of the border.
