Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a raft of infrastructure and welfare projects worth more than ₹12,000 crore in Bihar on Friday, marking a high-profile outreach ahead of the forthcoming assembly elections.

The ambitious package includes the long-awaited six-lane Digha-Sonpur rail-cum-road bridge, the Patna Metro rail project, and modernisation of several railway stations across the state. The projects are designed to ease urban congestion, improve connectivity, and bolster Bihar’s infrastructure base.

Apart from transport infrastructure, the initiatives also extend to healthcare and rural development. Modi will lay the foundation stone for medical colleges and hospitals in districts that have long suffered from inadequate facilities. Drinking water schemes and rural electrification projects form another major component of the rollout, aimed at improving the quality of life in villages.

The six-lane bridge across the Ganga, one of the centrepieces of the package, has been billed as a game changer for Bihar’s connectivity. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Patna and north Bihar, long hampered by inadequate links.

The projects are expected to touch nearly every sector, ranging from road and rail infrastructure to education and employment generation. Officials said they will not only improve civic amenities but also open up new opportunities for investment and job creation.

The unveiling comes at a politically sensitive time, with Bihar poised for elections. Modi has often used development projects as a plank to connect with the electorate, and the fresh round of announcements is likely to strengthen the ruling dispensation’s pitch.

Addressing a recent gathering, Modi said, “Bihar has the potential to drive the nation forward. The projects being launched will transform lives, accelerate growth, and empower the people.”

The announcements are expected to energise the ruling alliance while drawing sharp responses from the opposition, which has accused the government of repackaging old promises.
