A BJP-backed candidate won a Teachers' constituency seat in the Telangana Legislative Council, while an independent candidate won another Teachers' seat.
Malka Komaraiah, supported by the BJP, secured victory in the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Teachers' constituency, while Sripal Reddy Pingili, an independent candidate, won from the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda Teachers' constituency.
The counting of votes for the two Teachers' constituencies and the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar Graduates' constituency began on Monday. The election for these three MLC seats took place on February 27 using a preferential voting system with ballot papers.
While the results for the two Teachers' constituencies were announced late on Monday, the counting for the Graduates' constituency was still in progress.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar called Komaraiah’s win "historic" and said it showed that teachers trust Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The counting process is taking time due to the need to separate valid and invalid votes before proceeding with preferential counting.
A total of 2,50,328 voters, over 70 per cent of eligible voters, cast their votes in the Graduates' constituency election. There were 56 candidates competing for the Graduates' seat.
The BJP contested all three seats, while the ruling Congress only fielded a candidate in the Graduates' constituency. The BRS chose not to participate in the election.
BJP leaders, including Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, campaigned actively for their candidates. Congress leaders, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and state Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, also campaigned in support of their party’s candidate.
